Pine Resin

This weekend I was fortunate enough to visit an area with a high population of pine trees that required pruning. The reason this was so fortuitous is that injured pine trees will ooze resin, in order to seal up the wound area.

This resin is wonderful stuff since it can be used to make pitch, which is the woodsman answer to glue and waterproof sealer. The pine resin is also reason fatwood burns so easily and so brightly (fatwood is resin saturated pinewood) and adding it to a infant fire will help it grow even in the rain.

After the wet summer we've had this year, having a way to extend a fire will be a welcomed addition to the kit. Plus this stuff is free, I mean...it literally DOES grow on trees :D
